More convenience is to book a flight having only one-stop, most commonly Chennai taking 3 hours 50 minutes to reach the Veer Savarkar International Airport, Port Blair. Rest of them will have 2 or more stops in between, taking more hours to reach Port Blair, but it is cheaper than the former. Both the airports, Cochin and Port Blair are separated by an aerial distance of 1803 kilometres but depending upon the halt at intermittent cities, the travel will be delayed. In the absence of direct flights to Port Blair, connecting flights from Chennai are available to Port Blair. Spice jet, Jet Airways, Air India are some of the common domestic flights heading from Cochin to Port Blair.

Go By Water

Travellers in Kerala with a desire to experience the voyage across the Bay of Bengal must reach Chennai or Vishakhapatnam, being the nearest to catch the ferry ride. The convenient way to reach Chennai and Vishakhapatnam is by air and if not possible, opting train services is the best option. Passenger ships with regular 3 to 4 sailings monthly from Chennai are the nearest way to experience a voyage to Port Blair. Cruise ships, MV Nancowry and MV Campbell bay will be available for your ferry ride. One must travel for 60 hours and 56 hours to reach the destination if departure is from Chennai and Vishakhapatnam respectively. A person with seasickness must not pick a shipping service and if you wish to do so, then opt it for return travel.

Cellular Jail National Memorial

Cellular Jail reminds the gruesome years of the colonial period. Each corner of the jail reminds the horrible tortures faced by the freedom fighters. Atrocious punishments were imposed on prisoners and this jail is also known as ‘Kala Pani’. On 11th February 1979, cellular jail was declared as a ‘national memorial’ by the Prime Minister of India, Moraji Desai.

Visiting hours: for the Cellular Jail are between 9:00am to 4:45 Pm.

Light and Sound show timings: 5:30 Pm – 6:30 Pm, 6:45 pm – 7:45 pm, 8:00 pm – 9:00 pm, 9:15 pm – 10:15 pm (Hindi) on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. 8:00 Pm – 9:00 Pm (English) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The price of the show is Rs.50/- per head.

Admission cost: is Rs.30/-. Camera-Rs.100/-. Video camera-Rs. 200/- respectively.

Tip: The jail remains closed on Public Holidays.
